How to Recover Closed Tabs

September 25, 2026

Whether you closed one tab by accident or your whole browser crashed, your recently closed tabs aren't gone — here's how to get them back.

Method 1 — Ctrl + Shift + T (fastest, works in Chrome, Edge, and Firefox)

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + T
  2. Your most recently closed tab reopens instantly
  3. Keep pressing Ctrl + Shift + T to reopen more tabs, one at a time, in the order you closed them

Method 2 — Right-click the tab bar (if you prefer clicking)

  1. Right-click anywhere on the empty space in your tab bar (top of the browser)
  2. Click Reopen closed tab (Chrome/Edge) or Undo Close Tab (Firefox)
  3. Repeat to bring back more tabs

Method 3 — Recently closed / History menu (to pick a specific tab from a list)

  1. Click the three dots (top-right corner of the browser)
  2. Click History
  3. Look for Recently closed (Chrome/Edge) or Recently Closed Tabs (Firefox)
  4. Click the specific tab you want to reopen from the list

Method 4 — Recover an entire closed window

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + T
  2. If a whole window (not just a tab) was closed, this brings back the entire window with all its tabs at once

Method 5 — Restore your whole last browsing session (if your browser crashed or you closed it completely)

  1. Open your browser
  2. Click the three dots > History
  3. Click Restore previous session (Firefox) or reopen tabs from the Recently closed list (Chrome/Edge)
Note: Some browsers also prompt you automatically with a "Restore pages?" banner the next time you open them after a crash — click Restore if you see it.

Quick safety checklist

  1. Don't clear your browsing history or recently closed tabs before trying to recover them
  2. If you closed the browser completely, try Ctrl + Shift + T first
  3. If a specific tab isn't in the Recently closed list, check your browsing history
  4. Private/Incognito tabs generally cannot be recovered after being closed

Good to know

  1. This works whether you closed the tab a few seconds ago or several hours ago — recently closed tabs typically stay available in the browser's history until the relevant history is cleared
  2. Ctrl + Shift + T works across Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera, and most other browsers, so you don't need to remember a different shortcut for each one
